Actually, it was easier than that. The scripts that control my mail checker
applet are compiled scripts run from OE. I've now altered them so that they
check the name of the startup disk before sending any commands to the applet
(my OS 9 system folder is on a different volume to OS X).

Simple. If I'd just pondered for a minute or two longer before coming
whining to the list with this elementary problem...
