Now available as a commercial, browser-based product:

My own feeling about the Lifestreams approach is that they've come up with
a useful tool, but seem to suggest it as the entire toolbox - in essence,
replacing the existing restrictive metaphor with a different restrictive
metaphor, when what's really needed is less restrictions in the first
place. Though they certainly deserve credit for getting out there and
genuinely trying to push things forward.
The Xerox Parc project I was thinking of - Placeless Objects - is described
at <
http://www2.parc.com/csl/projects/placeless/home.html>. Well worth a
read if you're interested in this stuff. (No shortage of other
research-level projects out there too, although I can't think of any names
offhand.)
