To kill two birds with one stone...

JJ, to create a preview of fonts, take a look at "theFontsBrowser" by Jim
Lewis. He has some other software that may also provide what you desire
(MatchThis!, TheFONDler, The TypeBook, etc). If I recall correctly,
theTypeBook was scriptable, and others may well be (I haven't played with
them directly in years, but was always happy with Jim's work, especially back
when it was still free :)
