listing folder contents without opening

  • Subject: listing folder contents without opening

I am relatively new to OS X, but an old time scripter.
I seem to be having trouble getting current lists of files
within folders on mounted volumes with AS without
opening the folders first.

I am using 'items of alias...' but this gives me the data
from the last opening of the folder. I get lists of files that
no longer exist and don't get the list of files that do exist.

What is the correct way to get the current alias list of files
from within an unopened folder?
...preferably without bringing the Finder to the foreground.
