Well, I suppose it's possible for one never to have been running OS X at 4:30 am on a weekend morning and not have heard that wicked cron task start sounding like it's grinding the attached hard disks into hamburger patties.

So you might not have had the db to start with. But after it's there, 'locate' returns in about 2-3 seconds.

Sounded interesting, but returned a null string here.

I had to...
sudo /usr/libexec/locate.updatedb

Then I got a nice list, with paths!
The update took about a minute.
