Geoff,
There's an utility (free, I think, might be shareware)
called "GIF Prep" that does what you are looking to do
(remove the resource forks/preview images/custom icons from
gif & jpg files). If you can't locate a copy, write me
off-list and I'll email it to you -- it's less than 8k.
