I don't know FMP, but (on OS < 10) each application can choose to leave to
other apps more or less CPU time while it is the front application. Maybe
FMP does not let much CPU time available to others.

So, I think it's neither a processor matter nor a hard drive matter. You've
got to make sure FMP is in the background (though FMP's programmers may as
well have decided that FMP won't let much CPU time in the background
either).
