Mounting network volumes with different name

I apologize in advance if this is something simple but I have not been able
to find out how to do this.
First off I am trying to write a script (in OS X) that will mount a network
volume and call it something else. I can mount volumes fine, I can rename
*local* volumes fine but I can't rename network volumes. I don't want to
create aliases or rename the volumes so they keep the new name permanently
(on the server - the rename would only be valid for the time it is mounted).
For instance, a user has a share called username$ on a 2000 file server, but
they also have an account on a 2000 web server called, you guessed it,
username$. Since these names are the same it creates problems for some
applications (mainly Classic apps). It also creates some problems for the
users themselves. Normally the permissions for a mounted volume are:
Owner: the user that mounted it
Group: nobody (or unknown in the terminal).
The renaming is merely the 'set name of disk' command, nothing special.
Any suggestions?
TIA,
Chris
