I hesitate to suggest this, since your experience in AppleScript matters is
quite apparent - but won't this produce what you want on your system?...

IIRC, this was broken in AS 1.7 but I believe it may work in earlier and
later versions. (I suspect you're working in OS X / AS 1.8).
