A good example of this can be found in the Google.com HTML source code. Despite the fact that everywhere you look, coders are reminded to comment and write clean, organized code, Google's is ugly as sin and does not meet standards requirements (I don't think) but it is extremely optimized -- there are no redundant characters like an extra slash in empty elements, etc. Obviously Google's reputation as the fastest search engine needs to be preserved at all cost. And it works.
