I've been building some folder actions that end up being very long
scripts, and control at least a few applications (e.g., Quark, Suitcase,
Desktop Printer Manager, and Finder). I was expecting to run into
problems with the size of the compiled scripts themselves (which tend to
run well over 32 k), but this has not turned out to be an issue with
systems 9.1 or 9.2. (Which makes me figure I missed discussions about
finally breaking the 32k limit . . . Where can I learn more about that?)
Anyway, the scripts frequently run into problems which are reported as
"Folder Actions Extension" doesn't have enough memory. . .
Then I find that there is no "Memory" options in the Information window
for the extension. How is one supposed to change this?
I managed a workaround on my computer using OtherMenu: It lets me force
the extension (which shows up as a background application) to quit, then
lets me give it more memory. I changed it from 384 k to 784 k, and my
script is _almost_ working fine now. . . . It still errors if QuarkXPress
isn't already running and an item is dropped in the folder.
But (back to the memory allocation for FA), I need to install this action
on machines that do not have OtherMenu.
Can you please advise:
* How can the memory be otherwise changed?
* Is there a better solution (i.e., modularizing), that I should pursue?
TIA,
Dan Feather
