Scripting and Application Automation in General

I am wondering about the field of scripting in general. I have been writing
scripts to do various interapplication things for a while now and wonder how
commonplace this practice is. I really enjoy this kind of work--taking
mind-numbing tasks and creating programs to do them. (like, say, convert
digital images for the web and track them in a filemaker database and
automaticallys sort and organize them on a server) I even wonder how these
kinds of things are done in Windows and other environments. Does anyone have
any resources, links to good general info, or anecdotes? I realize this is
quite an open question.
