Please elaborate! How does rebuilding a fragmented database cause damage? If the database is already damaged prior to the rebuild, would not the rebuild correct the problems?

Does the Entourage DB file shrink in size, or are the individual database elements simply compacted toward one end of the file? If the former, then it makes perfect sense to shrink the db before backing it up, to save backup space and time.
