I seem to remember there used to be an issue (i.e. bug) regarding

this or will I be okay if I want to store preferences data as a list of
records?

Trying to write a record to a binary file using the "read" and "write" commands was almost completely broken prior to AppleScript 1.6, but it should be fine now.
