speed of stand-alone scripts vs. within Script Editor

I saw the comments regarding scripting speed and was curious if there were
any particular reasons that in my experience, scripts run pretty quickly
within Script Editor, but when executed as a stand-alone script application,
they are sluggish in comparison?
