This from Jason Bourque

>Is the Bounds of desktop not working in in OSX?

Not currently. The X desktop is a very different beast to the versatile
OS 9 version, and only displays items in the current user's directory. In
fact, it seems to have become a conceptual entity that exists outside
normal time and space, and hence has no need for tawdry physical
limitations like bounds. Perhaps this is why the dimensions returned when
asking the Finder for the desktop's bounds are totally bogus.
