It's already gone. Default boot is OS X. Or did you mean not going

to System 7" ??
I think there are a few senses in between there.
What are the majority of installed macs running as a default? I'm
betting that it's currently overwhelmingly OS 9. As Photoshop upgrades
get bought, that will change, but I question whether it will be majority
OS X within 6 months.
Right now, there are gigantic usability issues with X for people who've
built a workflow based on 9 and under. That was much less true for
system 7.
And Classic isn't "gone", by any reasonable standard, until the vast
majority of users cease to use programs that won't run in the native X
environment. When is *that* going to happen? It sure ain't goin to be
next week. How installed copies of QuarkXpress are out there? Most of
folks that use that are still in OS 9 completely -- they haven't even
touched X except to experiment on machines that don't do production.
Even if they are running X, all those Quark users are surely still using
Classic.
You're using a standard for when an OS is gone that's like a mockery of
the fashion sense. "OS 9? that's so last wednesday."
In some very important fundamental ways, X is a much better operating
system than 9. Unfortunately, in a lot of small, nitpicky human
interface ways that in total can add up to a big deal, 9 is far
superior. In terms of mac-style software avialability 9 is hugely
superior.
I have no doubt that enough of these shortcomings of X relative to 9
will be fixed either by Apple or by third parties. I very much doubt
that enough of it will happen to suit the majority of current mac users
within the next 12 months. That to me translates to exactly what
JollyRoger said: Classic is not going away soon. Many of the people I
know who are using X were not mac users to begin with. They were
Windows or Unix users.
