Well, so much for theories! I've just rechecked exactly what does happen -
and it seems I was talking complete nonsense! 8-0

When using 'a reference to' an alias, it updates dynamically - just like the
alias itself would. However, if the alias is broken, it returns the alias
first defined by 'choose file'.

Apologies for any confusion caused (although I think it was all here)!
