That's correct. 9.1 comes with AS 1.5.5. You can update to the more stable AS
1.6 through Software Update, or by downloading it from (somewhere on) Apple's
site.
The buggy AS 1.7 comes with Mac OS 9.2.2. (Or "used to come with" - I think
Apple changed this back to AS 1.6?)

This list has seen mostly positive comments on the latest 1.8 beta, I think.
But it *is* still considered beta by Apple. If you don't feel comfortable
with running beta software, stick with 1.6.

I've got X sort of running on a 7300/200 with 64MB RAM. It' wasn't easy, but
possible. But don't expect the GUI to be actually usable. I find X's GUI way
too unresponsive on a G4/400 with 768MB of RAM. On the 7300, just launching
Terminal gives you enough time to go and get a coffee ;)
