I made some buttons when AppleScript shipped in 1993. Ed Lai's favorite was "We didn't take FIVE years." That would imply they started in 1989. ;)

AppleEvents were part of System 7. Ed wrote the AppleEvent manager, and updated it for AppleScript, which shipped alone but was first integrated with System 7 Pro, which I believe was 7.1.1 or something like that.

So yes, you were out of the loop.
