Is this possible in OS X? It's not in OS 9.x; nor attaching a folder action
to a desktop printer folder, nor to an alias file on the desktop to a folder
[of course a folder action script can be attached to an open folder that has
an alias file to it on the desktop].

No, because folder actions don't exist in Mac OS X yet. They're on the list of Things To Do.
