Depends what you mean by 'true prefs file'. You can use the Finder to set
file type to 'pref' if you want to 'disguise' your text file better. If you
mean something else then maybe you could clarify that.
You might find some useful info in the "Saving lists of records to a text
file" thread too, for options on storing non-ASCII (i.e. binary) data to
disk.
