ASCII can be a red flag. Watch out for the line ends. You may need to make the download after specifying ftp mode ASCII and I don't think URL Access can do that. Or worse it may try to "help out" by looking at the file type.

See if there is any difference when you use a ftp client that can specify ASCII mode - ftp in a command line under OS neXt or Fetch or Interarchy in MacOS 7-9. ASCII mode will convert line ends to whatever format is in used where the file is to be stored.
