EXPLANATION (i.e. why on earth would anyone do this)
I have multiple computers here all connected to the net via a hub
with
an
uplink to my cable modem (DHCP -- no static id). Only 1 computer at a
time
has internet access.
My suggestion : )
tell person "Xandra Lee"
buy a router

Cute...
at some point we may get a router, the one connection thing has been a
non-issue (till OSX) since it's extraordinarily rare that there's ever
more
than one person in working at any of the computers at one time. My
partner's
are usually in the shop making furniture not surfing the net.
the main reasons I haven't switched (pardon the pun) to a router:
1. a concern that the bandwidth will be subdivided (possibly even when
only
one CPU is on the net) -- Much the way the cable TV reception here
declines
every time we add a set.
--please let me know if this isn't the case.
Not at all. Ok, so occasionally a box will check the time or Software
update servers. You can stop that too if you want.
2. It's technically illegal
Not at all!
I would never suggest that you actually use the connection on two
boxes simultaneously! You don't let anyone else read your magazines do
you? Listen to your CDs? That would be like letting someone who doesn't
even have cable come over and share your connection to watch Friends!
Zounds! What kind of fiend do you think I am? ; )
3. Laziness, and again, lack of necessity -- the AppleScript solution
(that
worked fine till X) meant that once or twice a week someone had to
select a
script from the Apple Menu, before picking up their email.
