[snip] the app just hangs when that code is called (I mean spinning

How long does the spinning cursor appear (network timeouts may be
quite long)?
At first (and quick) glance, your script seems to be correct.
Could it be that something more basic should be checked first?
You know, those obvious things such as: Can you ping your other
machine? Are every settings needed for program linking correctly set
on both machines? :-)
The machine I'm trying to contact is an OS X Server (10.2.1) iMac. The
machine I'm on is OS X 10.2.1 (client) iBook. Strange thing is, I've
had something like this this script work in the past... not this
complicated, but basic.
The two are connected by a 10 Base T hub.
#ping 192.168.2.2
PING 192.168.2.2 (192.168.2.2): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 192.168.2.2: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=1.7 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.2: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=1.153 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.2: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.896 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.2: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.891 ms
I can also log in using AFP via the finder without a problem.
I've left the spinning beachball up for about 5 minutes before giving
up. When I bring the force quit window up, it shows my app's name in
red.
