It's also handy for mail notifications if your email client supports IMAP.
Just copy the message from local to the IMAP folder, and voila, you've got
mail without having to run rules.
It's also handy if you have an automated process that many people need to
check on and you are using IMAP shared folders. One copy of the data to many
people, no need to replicate n times in n mailboxes.

Just because you, (the application developer) can't see why someone needs to
be able to script something is immaterial. Put it in there anyway. The whole
idea with AppleScript is to not just allow for simple automation of UI
tasks, hell, all you need is QuickKeys for that. The true magic of
AppleScript happens when someone comes up with an idea that really perverts
what an application can do for good, (building an image conversion process
from Entourage, Photoshop, and Filemaker), bad, (my remote luser shocker
system...some details available at:

Or silly, (Andy Ihnatko's Darth Vader Bank Cat B Gone).
You don't *have* to know *why* or *what good it will do*. That's not your
job. That's our job, the people perverting your application to do our
bidding. Unless it's something that will really cause immediate and real
technical or security issues, put it in the dictionary! if it looks like a
problem child step, *then* ask why...but don't just sit there and use "Well
I can't see why you would want this.." as a reason not to do something.
