I gather those aren't real "" characters (ASCII 34) but actually ASCII 0. I
guess an AppleScript coercion to "" is a lot better than crashing like it
used to do some time back, but still a little confusing. I seem to remember
there was a time when ASCII 0 would show up as "\" in some contexts, which
was handy since it has no independent meaning otherwise
