When you say "which version," do you mean merely distinguishing between 9
and X, or getting the actual version number? Your question is ambiguous.
If you mean just distinguishing between 9 and X, Apple's example scripts use
the technique of trying to execute a script command that is only available
in X, and catching the error to notice that 9 is running.
If you mean the actual version number, in each of my reports on new versions
of AppleScript on The AppleScript Sourcebook, I include a section about how
to tell which version of AppleScript is installed. Some of these sections
deal with getting OS version information, as well. There are two or three
different techniques available, maybe more.
If you need to determine versions going back some time, you have to deal
with the occasional errors in Apple's version information. For example, my
report that dealt with the initial release of Mac OS X talks about how to
work around the complete omission of one form of a version test in one
particular circumstance.
