My Mac has been working ever so diligently since yesterday afternoon, so I
haven't interrupted it to test the theory. But.........
I think that's what 'do updates' is for. After you add a page and it's
contents, but before you test for box overflows, tell QuarkXPRess to do
updates.
Let us know what happens.

i believe a box has to be 'drawn'
before the box overflows property is evaluated.
show page curPage
or
set current page to page curPage
may help
