It works in most cases, but there may be a file or folder on the
desktop that has the same name with one of the disks.

substitute id for name

Finder reports an error when I try to access the id property of an item. I checked Finder's dictionary, but id was not in the property list for Finder items. The id property seems to be discontinued.

In this case, the index property can probably be substitued for the name property.

In OS X 10.2, every item seems to have no value in the description
property.

write your own?

For example,

tell application "Finder" to get description of item 1 in desktop

returns

missing value

and the returned value is the same for other items.
