In OS 9 . . .

Tanaka's osax 2.0 has "MT replace" which should suit this purpose.

set x to MT replace search ":" replace "-"

This also allows you to specify which characters replace which.

Under OS X you would need to write a comparison script much like Apple's
sample finder script "Change case of item names"
I'm sure that there are those on this list with the ability to flesh better
ideas but I work with what i have . . .
