Erm, no. Why is it the one I need to use is the one that returns the wrong

That looks like a correct result to me, for the volume named Steve, in Mac
OS 9 (for the owner in the presence of Multiple Users...not sure about
other users). And Mac OS 8 and System 7. The Temporary Items folder is a
hidden folder at the top level of each volume (except volumes which don't
have one yet because no App wanted to use it yet, and perhaps some or all
sorts of server-mounted volumes).
The rules are...remove files you put here before your execution ends (some
developers took longer to figure this out than others). (The Temporary
Items folders are the source of the files which show up in the "Rescued
items from <volume>" after an "improper shutdown" and subsequent restart.)

Then I realised - "Temporary Items" isn't a standard Apple folder. So why

Application Support for dumping temporary files in?
Temporary Items is standard in System 7 through Mac OS 9, and is right for
files which die before the end of a single execution. Application Support
is right for files which have more persistence than that but, well, support
the application in some sense.
