Get/set login items

  • Subject: Get/set login items

The release notes for AS 1.9 say "In Mac OS 10.2, the only scriptable system
preference is the Login Items preference, which allows you to create, edit,
and remove Login Items. See the Login Items suite in the System Events
dictionary for details. [2853217]".

I find the entries there for "login item" and "application". The second,
when selected in Script Debugger, causes the app to hang. As for login item,
I find I can do things like "get login item "LaunchBar"' or "get properities
of" a login item, and I can "get every login item". But I cannot for the
life of me figure out how to create a new one, edit existing ones (the
properties are all r/o), or remove any of them. When I try

make new login item with properties {path:pathtoanapp}

I get a "wrong arguments" error. At least that is what I think it means; the
error message is very cryptic. I've tried every variation of argument I can
think of.

Can anyone supply me with a working example of creating a new login item?
How about deleting one? I'd very much like to make a simple script that
operates on an item selected in the Finder and adds it to the login items
list.
