The plot thickens! I then realised that that AS scripts I had in the sub-directory

~/Library/Scripts/TextEdit/

did run, so I moved the perl scripts to this sub-directory and they ran fine. The next step was clear -- replace the space in "perl scripts" with an underline and try again. Success! Replace the space in the dirname and try again. Failure!

So the bug seems to be that a perl (or other?) script will not run if it is in a sub-directory whose name contains a space.

Enough of all this. I must get to work.
