This will certainly work, but I want to point out that this sort of
thing is considered to be in bad taste, interface-wise. The user is
doing what they're doing, and it's presumptuous and rude to suddenly
jump in their face yammering on about how they need to choose a file
*right now*.
By that logic, you could also say that it is rude for a script to
activate
another application, since that wasn't initiated by the user either.
Yes you could. I'd generally agree.
And it is often a necessity that the user stop farting around and
that they
do choose a file *right now*, because the AppleScript is trying to
get work
done, and whatever the user is doing at that moment is impeding that.
I'll be the judge of what constitutes "farting around" here in my
little kingdom. I don't want some presumptuous software deciding for me.
There's little more irritating than having a dialog shoved in your face
when you're doing something MORE IMPORTANT (I'll be the judge of that
too, thank you.)
Sometimes it makes perfect sense to put up a dialog over whatever
application happens to be in front.
When?
It's sure a whole lot better than putting up a dialog which may be
behind
the front app, timing out a minute later, and the first the user knows
about
it is getting "AppleEvent timed out."
display dialog "Emergency! The world is ending today!" giving up after
weeks
That should take care of the timeouts. And remember, an icon is
bouncing in the dock all the while. I'll get around to it, just keep
your pants on...
