Two questions - on the dumbish side

It seems to me these should be simple, but I can't find an answer to either.

1. Is there a way for AS to change the current printer without using
Desktop Printer Manager (OS9, OSX - preferably both)?

Desktop Printer Manager doesn't exist in OSX and I'm trying to write a
script for someone who doesn't use Desktop Printers. I need to be able to
switch to a PDF Writer and then back to the default printer without user
intervention.

2. Is there a way to determine if an application is currently running
without using a Finder "Process" command?

The AS I'm trying to run is generated by an application running in Classic.
When running in OSX, the "Process" command simply doesn't work - the AS is
using Classic Applescript which doesn't understand OSX processes.

If anyone has any ideas I'd be very grateful.

Cheers,

Daniel Weinstein
