I don't have a good answer to your real question concerning the
command line version of Apple System Profiler, but I do have a
recommendation: Don't rely on the hardware serial number information
available in Apple System Profiler as a unique identifier of a given
Macintosh.
First, not all Mac models store this information. If I recall,
systems prior to Blue & White G3s do not store the serial number in a means
accessible via software. Second, some hardware repairs can cause a machine
to "lose" its serial number... at the very least a motherboard swap will
eliminate it.
I have bumped into this problem before when trying to automate
inventory tracking of Macs. The S/N just isn't reliable.
You could always try for the MAC address of a NIC.
