OS X is Unixish to such an extent that this is no longer true.
Localization doesn't extend into the filesystem anymore... at least
not very far (the Icons at the top of the Finder windows use
localized names, but carry me to folders er directories with english
names). Application files also carry english names now. I guess this
is because OS X's localization happens on another level as it has in
OS 9. And as application files don't have to be touched they're not
renamed any more (please correct me if I'm wrong).

Does anyone else notice how Apple seems to care less and less about
international customers?
Last year we had the strange "Startup Disk"-scripting incident, where
a terminology conflict seemed to occur only on non-US systems.
This year, we had the problem that AppleScript 1.7, Alias-Manager and
"weird characters" didn't work together too well (i.e. not at all).
AppleScript 1.8.3 for OS 9 is STILL only available as an installer
package that only installs on US-english systems (which is a pity, as
it cured quite a few of my crashing problems in a large FaceSpan
application).
Then there's the Address Book application in which localization
obviously hasn't been a topic, at least when seen from a scripters
perspective.
And these four points just concern scripting and come right off the
top of my head - I guess there'd be a lot more to find if I'd dig
through the archives. And there's a LOT more outside of scripting.
I think its disturbing that Apple starts (or better: has already
started long ago) to neglect one of its once outstanding virtues:
true international support.

P.S. Before anybody starts calling me names (e.g. "whiner") please
give me a hint to whom at Apple criticism on its international
support may be addressed. This REALLY would be very welcome. Apple
Germany is merely a marketing instrument (and a bad one at that) and
doesn't care or move at all.
