Evidently I have a very hard time making myself clear, and more than likely
I didn't fully take in something you've already said. What you write above
(that I chose a set of characters which happen to exist in the old character
sets) does not come as a surprise. I'm trying to understand at what point -
which "layer" - characters with style information are substituted for
Unicode. I do understand that "real" Unicode is only used when the old stuff
fails. But where and when? Long before AppleScript enters the picture? Only
when it needs to be displayed? If the Finder itself uses real Unicode - hex
numbers - for every file and folder name in the file system, why should it
matter that I chose characters which could be represented previously, back
when I had the Japanese language kit installed in OS 9? These characters,
too, do have a Unicode encoding as well as whatever's being used instead.
I'm trying to understand at what point the choice is made to ignore its
Unicode encoding and go with the styled-text way of describing the same
character. Is this an AppleScript decision or something earlier in the
process that AppleScript is simply reflecting?
