I recently gave a talk on AppleScript to the local user group. My sample code does just that. It's at:

ftp://ftp.macnauchtan.com/SMMUG/Get_SMMUG_news_four.bin

You might be interested in some of the other stuff in the /SMMUG/ directory. The LWP module in perl (or MacPerl with OS 7-9) is much more flexible if you want to get serious about extracting stuff from html pages.
