Umm, according to Asanti's site, their 590 card is a Fast Ethernet NIC, not
a SCSI card, so I'm not sure how you could attach the scanner to that...
In any case, this sounds like a SCSI sleep issue - many SCSI cards have/had
issues with sleep mode. Recent drivers usually resolves the issue.
