Does anyone know if there is ANY way of making an Apple script app
(under 9.1) interact with the infra red remote control functions on an
old Mac 5400?
Here's why: A friend and I both have 5400's, and they seem to
accommodate cheap, modern ATA (IDE) hard drives without any real
problems, making them PERFECT for a lounge room "Ancient Mac remote
controlled MP3 juke box solution ()". We've hooked 'em up to run of the
mill amplifiers, and our lounge rooms now BONG to the mac startup chime
in glorious stereo, whenever our Universal remotes want them to. Here's
the problem; we can stick an iTunes app alias into the startup folder,
so that when we turn on the computer by remote, it will startup
(slowly... it's a 5400) and then run iTunes,
BUT we want a small amount of control over iTunes through the same
remote, mainly to avoid having a keyboard, mouse etc, plugged in to the
5400. ("next song" is really what we're after, but in principle, I guess
almost anything's possible, IF we can get an Apple script to respond to
IR input.)
So, to sum up, can I write Applescript (s) which will "do action X" in
response to a signal from this old fashioned infra red input?
I know that programs CAN respond to IR directly, because I can open and
close Apple Video player by pressing a button on the remote, so is it
impossible to find (or put) this functionality into an Apple script? If
Apple script can't do it, where would I look next? If Apple Video Player
can do it, surely other Apps could be ResEdited, or something??? (If
anyone has any answers, you might like to temper them with the knowledge
that I'm barely an apple scriper, and not a programer's armpit... read
script-weeny!)
