Absolutely not. You may have three message windows open. The frontmost window is not necessarily in what Mail jokingly calls the selection. That's what's so ridiculous.

You have only to select a message in a mailbox and then create a new message window to see the truth of this.

Make two new message windows and then tell me how to refer to the messages.
