Average Color of JPG

Hello All,

I am trying to get the average color of a .jpg. I found a photoshop function "Fit Image..." under the file menu which you can reduce the image down to 1x1 pixels. The one pixel remaining seems to be the right color (an average of whole image). I cannot figure out how to get that color however. Photoshop only seems to allow one to perform actions and doesn't seem to allow any values to be returned. Illustrator won't read colors from raster objects. I can't figure out how to get the color through UI scripting of Photoshop. Once you get the color, I can't seem to reference the color window.

Is there an easier way to do this?
