That does help, thanks.

I'd be interested in hearing from people who have used speech via Java; my
concern is one of timing: not starting a speech unit before another one
finishes. I'm somewhat leery of timing getting lost going from Java >
AppleScript > Speech framework and back. I guess I'll find out when I get to
that point. :-)
