I don't accept the initial premise, Robert.
A list is not the place to fulfill such a need. Or certainly not to be
considered the only source to which one turns.
Do whatever you did before there was the internet and mail lists and
newsgroups. Read a book and fail until you no longer fail.
Perhaps my psycho-social observations are irrelevant, but I offer:
Western culture, particularly as infectiously spread around the globe by the
internet, has the effect of making every person believe that he or she, and
his or her "problems", are of the same character and quality as everyone
else's. Words like "emergency" and "critical" and "urgent" and "immediate"
pale in comparison to the real instances of such which occur all around us
each day. There is no understanding that the privilege of having a
computer, having an internet connection, having the means to access such a
wonderful collection of individuals as on this list (present self humbly
excluded) is, in fact, a privilege and does not convey any "rights" to the
proud possessor of such luxury.
Paul's emergency (his word) was certainly not an emergency at all, but an
impatient, underdeveloped social personality acting out in an anonymous
(i.e. "faceless") group because it offers protection from responsibility for
one's actions.
Regrettably, he was rewarded and not held accountable. Further, as Kai
astutely pointed out by example, Paul M. had other more benevolent models to
learn from but chose to ignore them.
Paul M. never considered that he didn't explain himself well, that a day was
not at all a long time, and that perhaps people were even "working on his
behalf" while he did nothing except bristle and become intolerant (...and
intolerable.)
