try this :
//
(current date) - "Sunday 3 August 2003 16:16:21"
//

it works fine

try now this :
//
set x to "Sunday 3 August 2003 16:16:21"
(current date) - x
//
--> error : can't make of "Sunday 3 August 2003 16:16:21" a date
