Not saying that this is what you'll get from my post, but let me state how I understand "a reference to".

For me, "a reference to" is nothing more than a shortcut - when I teach about it I say "it's just text processing". In other languages you would say "define": the variable just stands for the exact thing that you wrote. Not a single other thing is performed. In particular, the "reference" is certainly not a pointer. Once you say "set w to a reference to window 1", w is just a shortcut for "window 1", whatever "window 1" will mean when you use "w".

Whether my remark can be of any use in Eudora's context, I don't know.
