have a look at 'defaults' , that will help you to modify easily

Which was one of the tools I had looked at, but could not figure out
how to get it to edit the /var/db/SystemConfiguration/preferences.xml
file. Defaults would only modify local (~/library) files in my
attempts.
This certainly appeared to be the correct way to modify the file,
but... If this is possible, please show me.

I need to modify one value in an xml file, and save the updated
file. So far, I don't see an easy way to do this, but perhaps I'm
missing something.
Specifically, I need to modify the user id (authname) in the system
preferences.xml file. I need non-Admin users to be able to do this
so they can enter their own dial up information while on the road.
After looking at the issue from several angles, modifying the file
directly appears to be my best choice.
