It certainly doesn't like sending them as keystrokes.
The current release of PreFab UI Browser does not send function keys as
keystrokes, as you've discovered. This is primarily because the AppleScript
'keystroke' command sends only characters, and function keys do not generate
characters.
However, your message spurred me to reconsider the original design decision,
and today I implemented a new feature for the upcoming version 1.2 of UI
Browser. It is described like this in the version history:
"The Keystrokes drawer now supports the use of any function key in the top
row of the keyboard. When a function key is entered, it is identified as
"F1," "F2," and so on, and its virtual key code is displayed. A virtual key
code is a hardware-independent code identifying the key that was pressed.
The Send button sends the virtual key code to the target application,
simulating a press of the function key while the target application is
active. The target application is brought briefly to the front to make this
work. (Note that the system intercepts some function keys to perform special
tasks, such as changing the volume on a PowerBook.)"
We plan to release PreFab UI Browser 1.2 shortly after Apple releases Mac OS
X 10.3 "Panther." Panther has many enhancements, and UI Browser will take
full advantage of those that relate to Apple's Accessibility and AppleScript
technologies.
